Obama Hid 470,000 Bin Laden Raid Documents to Ensure Reelection

The death of Osama Bin Laden was one of the few bright spots during Obama’s presidency, and, at the time, the former president milked it for all it was worth.

It was common knowledge that Obama (and later Hillary Clinton) was using the Bin Laden raid as a campaign tool in spite of the fact that he had little to do with it. Now, though, in a shocking revelation, we’re finding out that not only did Obama use the Bin Laden raid as a campaign tool, he also manipulated the evidence from the raid in order to benefit his own legacy.

In a recent piece published by The Weekly Standard, writer Stephen Hayes details how the Obama administration purposefully concealed almost half a million documents pertaining to the Bin Laden raid leading up to the former president’s reelection. These 470,000 documents showed that Al Qaeda had, in fact, not been defeated, in spite of Bin Laden’s death. This fact, however, did not fit with the narrative that Obama used to win reelection in 2012.

Rather than being honest with the American people about the current state of the War on Terror, President Obama perpetuated a lie, used that lie to sway votes, and concealed any documents that would prove his statements to be false.

President Obama made no attempt to let the American people know that they weren’t hearing the full story. In fact, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) would go on to issue a press release claiming that enough documents had been released to “close the book” on Osama Bin Laden. Even the title of the press release, “Closing the Book on Bin Laden: Intelligence Community Releases Final Abbottabad Documents” was deceptive. We now realize that the title “Closing the Book on Bin Laden: Intelligence Community Releases Final Abbottabad Documents (Minus 470,000 Vitally Important Ones)” would have been a lot more appropriate.

“In the spring of 2012, with the Republican presidential primaries nearing an end and shortly before the first anniversary of the successful raid on bin Laden’s compound, Obama’s National Security Council hand-picked 17 documents to be provided to the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point for analysis,” Hayes wrote.

“The West Point documents were shared with Obama-friendly journalists. Their conclusion was the only one possible, given the documents they were provided: At the time of his death, Osama bin Laden was frustrated and isolated, a relatively powerless leader of a dying organization. In the summer and fall of 2012, Obama would use this theme as the main national security rationale for his reelection: Al Qaeda was alternately ‘on the run’ or ‘decimated’ or on the path to defeat.'”

Of course, the truth was that Al Qaeda was far from decimated. In fact, at the time, the organization had gained a powerful ally in the Iranian government. With Obama’s second term focused heavily on having the US partner with Iran, it would not have served the president at all for the people to realize that Al Qaeda was still operational and working alongside a country that Obama was trying desperately to cozy up to. Fortunately for Obama, a few lies and coverups was all it took to ensure that we never saw this information until it was too late.

The lesson behind this story is that Obama and politicians like him do not care about the interests of the people they serve, nor do they even view themselves as servants of those people.

Except in matters where the security of the country would be undermined, it is the duty of the president to be as transparent as possible with the American people. This is why we are seeing President Trump declassifying documents left and right, including some that have been sealed for decades. Obama, however, saw it fitting to skew the evidence in order to ensure his reelection rather than being honest with the people he swore to serve.

As more and more information continues to come out, it’ll be interesting to see what other cases of blatant, self-serving dishonesty there are to be found in Obama’s eight years of so-called service to the American people.
