A major factor in Middle America’s support of Donald Trump during the election was his promise to put a halt to rampant illegal immigration. While dealing with the estimated 12 million illegal aliens already in this country will prove to be a lengthy ordeal, Trump has promised to immediately stop granting refugee status to immigrants from the Middle East until proper vetting procedures can be put into place.
President Obama and his progressive supporters claim it is undemocratic to deny access to refugees from war-torn countries like Syria. The implication is that Trump and those who voted for him are heartless and un-American. The irony in this is that the top five states having unvetted refugees from Syria forced on them are red states (Republican), not blue (Liberal).
In 2016, the Obama administration told Congress it intended to permanently resettle 110,000 refugees in 2017, about half of them coming from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Burma, and other countries that are jihadist hotspots where proper vetting of refugees is virtually impossible.
To further complicate matters, the Obama administration has reclassified many of the people from Central America who are flooding into the U.S. as refugees. Like those from the Middle East, these immediately qualify to receive federal food stamps, Medicaid, and other federal benefits as well as placing them on a fast-track to full citizenship within five years.
Conservatives in Congress warn that this is a dangerous increase – up 29 percent from 2016 and 57 percent from 2015. They also say that the actual numbers are much higher than Obama admits to. Some experts say the refugee count admitted in 2017 may end up as high as 150,000 to 200,000.
A poll conducted by the Brookings Institute reveals that the public is open to accepting refugees but nowhere near the numbers proposed by Obama.
The Washington Times reports that when asked how many the U.S. should resettle in 2017, the median answer among Democrats was 15,000, and the median answer among Republicans was 10,000. The House Judiciary Committee is pushing legislation that would give local officials a say in whether they can handle an influx.
“We must remain compassionate toward refugees, but we also need to make sure that we use common sense,” committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., told the Times. “Unfortunately, President Obama unilaterally increases the number of refugees resettled in the United States each year and gives little thought as to how it will impact local communities.”
There can be no doubt there is an obvious agenda in how refugees are accepted and where they are placed. Before the outbreak of the recent civil conflict in Syria, the country had a vibrant minority Christian community totaling ten percent of the population.
In spite of this, of the 6,227 Syrians relocated to the U.S. since 2015, only 23 are Christian. More than 98 percent admitted are Sunni Muslim. ISIS and the al-Nusra Front are the Sunni groups that are viciously persecuting Christians in Syria.
The combined total of 100,000 refugees accepted by the U.S. in 2016 mainly come from Syria, Somalia, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq, Burma, Bosnia, and Congo. These are generally dropped off in almost total secrecy without prior warning to local authorities including a town’s mayor, other city managers, or schools superintendent.
More than 24 governors, mostly Republican, have sent letters to the Obama administration following the attacks by refugees on local citizens, requesting no more Syrians be delivered to their states. Obama has ignored these governors and sent the refugees anyway.
The Obama administration insists these refugees have been properly vetted and will be an asset to the cities where they are placed. However, FBI Director James Comey told Congress last fall that it was impossible to verify the backgrounds of refugees coming from a failed state like Syria.
According to Comey, Syria is torn by civil war and has no reliable law enforcement or intelligence data it can make available to an international body like the United Nations or to the U.S. In spite of the warnings of Comey and Department of Homeland Security, Secretary Jeh Johnson, the State Department continues to insist that refugees are the “most heavily scrutinized” and vetted of all immigrants entering the U.S.
It appears that President Obama will continue to place unvetted refugees in primarily red states like Nebraska to the bitter end. Thankfully Trump will have the power to stop the flood by rescinding Obama’s executive orders – something he has promised to on day one.
