On January 14, 2018, convicted felon Chelsea Manning, formerly Bradley, confirmed she’s running for a Senate seat in Maryland.
Three days after filing a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission, Manning tweeted, “Yup, we’re running for Senate.” The former Army intelligence analyst would be challenging Senator Benjamin L. Cardin, Democrat, in the June 2017 primary. The senior senator from Maryland, Cardin is serving his second term, and is the overwhelming favorite to win the upcoming election.
According to Manning’s website, she joined the military in 2007 and was deployed to Iraq two years later. In 2010, the Senate candidate was arrested for handing almost 750,000 documents to WikiLeaks that contained information about America’s war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, details regarding prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, and State Department cables. At the time, the leak of classified information was the largest of its kind in the history of this country. U.S. officials insisted the leaks placed the lives of American soldiers and Afghan informants in danger. Shrugging the accusations off, Manning proclaimed she had a duty to tell the public how the U.S. was carrying out its wars.
Manning was sentenced to 35 years for her crimes in 2013. However, she was acquitted of the charge of aiding the enemy. If found guilty, that charge would have carried the possibility of the death penalty. After sentencing, the disgraced former Army intelligence analyst came out as transgender.
While in prison at Fort Leavenworth, Manning both tried to commit suicide and went on a hunger strike before the Army approved her for gender reassignment surgery. Before leaving the White House, President Obama raised eyebrows when he commuted Manning’s sentence to time served. She was ceremoniously released from her military prison in Kansas.
After leaving prison, Manning moved to Maryland. According to her website, Manning has written for Medium and the Guardian concerning issues of transgender rights, free speech, civil liberties, transparency, and computer security while residing in her new home.
In her writing debut for the Guardian, Manning stated that Obama’s 2008 election was an awakening for her. Interestingly, Manning seems to have little regard for the man who released her from a long prison sentence. She wrote that she felt Obama only attained “hints of a progressive legacy.” She believed he had few lasting achievements. The convicted leaker wrote, “This vulnerable legacy should remind us that what we really need is a strong and unapologetic progressive to lead us” and “What we need as well is a relentless grassroots movement to hold that leadership accountable.”
In addition to the confirmation tweet, Manning also released her first campaign ad on January 14, 2018. The video is extremely anti-government, and displays numerous violent clips including the Charlottesville, Virginia riot that occurred in August of 2017. In the video, Manning doesn’t reference the GOP or President Trump directly. Rather, she paints all politicians as powerful people who abuse their power and need to be divested of it. Without discussing any policy proposals she hopes to take to Congress, Manning simply asks for support.
“We live in trying times,” she said. “Times of fear, of suppression, of hate. We don’t need more, or better, leaders. We need someone willing to fight” and “We need to stop asking them to give us our rights. They won’t support us, they won’t compromise.”
Many sane minds would likely assume that someone convicted of leaking hundreds of thousands of documents containing classified information potentially detrimental to the safety of Americans and others would be barred from running for a U.S. Senate seat. Interestingly, they would be wrong. The Constitution allows Americans who possess a criminal record to run for Congress. However, state laws differ. In Maryland, the only stipulations to run for a U.S. Senate seat are to be at least 30 years of age, to possess citizenship in the U.S. for a minimum of nine years, and to reside in Maryland at the time of the election. The information provided on Maryland’s website doesn’t preclude someone with a criminal record to run for a U.S. Senate seat.
While many Americans consider Manning’s acts as traitorous, she will undoubtedly receive the equivalent of hero worship from some on the progressive left during her upcoming campaign. Evan Greer, campaign director for the non-profit entity Fight for the Future is thrilled about Manning’s political aspirations.
Referring to the Senate candidate, he said, “The world is a better place with her as a free woman, and this latest news makes it clear she is only beginning to make her mark on it.”

I don’t believe convicted felons can get a security clearance. Senators need at least a SECRET clearance. Therefore Manning will not be qualified to run for US Senator.

Electing “Chelsea” Manning to the Senate from Maryland would be the same as electing Charles Manson to the Senate from California.
