Jim Carrey: ‘Osama Bin Laden Doesn’t Hold a Candle to Mitch McConnell’

Osama bin Laden did some annoying stuff, for sure, but he is no where near as evil as some conservative politicians. At least that is what one Hollywood celebrity had to say this week. Jim Carrey’s statement about Osama Bin Laden and Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made headlines on a day that should be reserved for remembrance, 9/11.

Carrey was once a leading actor and headlining comedian has focused more on art and politics after his last few films flopped. His statement about McConnell came while he was sharing a piece of his art online.

Carrey was showing off his latest cartoon online; the image depicts a hand holding a $100 bill, dipping it in blood. Aside from the hand having only three fingers, the drawing is at best pedestrian – but the quote alongside it was designed to be inflammatory.

“10,000 gun deaths in 2019 and the year is far from over,” Carrey shared. “What Osama bin Laden did to us was terrible but he doesn’t hold a candle to Mitch McConnell.”

Carrey’s accusation against the politician states that he is responsible for more deaths than terrorist mastermind Osama Bin Laden. Families of the 2,700 people killed on 9/11 would likely disagree.

This piece appears to be triggered by figures released by the Gun Violence Archive, that stated that guns have injured more than 10,000 people in the US this year. Carrey did not get the warm reception he expected, with the exception of far left leaning followers and media.

Many angry responses followed, from commentators, Twitter users and others who saw the inflammatory Tweet.

“Who could have ever predicted that one day Jim Carrey would go crazy?” tweeted conservative political commentator Michael Knowles. “Jim Carrey used to be a comedian…until Trump broke him,” said politics writer Nick Short.

Carrey’s art and accusation seem to stem from the blocking of a progressive bill requiring background checks for legal gun purchases. McConnell blocked the bill, and was later blamed for shootings that occurred after the date the bill was blocked. Progressive and Democrat leaders spoke out against McConnell, stating that he would be held responsible for violence that occurred after his actions.

This is not the first time that Carrey has lashed out at conservatives, or made extreme connections with his political based art. He has previously mocked former press secretary Sarah Sanders and President Donald Trump. The attacks were severe enough that the New Yorker highlighted them, calling them “disturbing” in a recent issue. The actor has basked in the attention, and assures followers that he will not be dissuaded from creating his art or making political commentary and accusations against politicians.
