Trump Scraps Obama Guidelines on Race-Based College Admissions

The fact that colleges and universities across the country have been using race as a factor in determining admissions is well-known. What may not be as well-known is the fact that these educational institutions have been acting under Obama-era guidelines which recommended the diversification of educational environments.

These legal recommendations are now set to be eliminated by the Trump Administration in an effort to ensure that those who work hard and earn good grades won’t be rejected from educational institutions based solely on their skin color and ethnic background.

Naturally, the move has generated a great deal of controversy. Trump Administration officials are making it clear that Obama’s guidelines go beyond Supreme Court precedent, and has led to educational institutions embracing forms of affirmative action that go beyond what is allowed by law.

In a DOJ statement issued in November of 2017, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made it clear that the DOJ will no longer be issuing “guidance documents” such as the one issued by the Obama Administration regarding the use of race in the admissions process. At the time, the Attorney General rescinded over two dozen documents that fell under this category and made it clear that the DOJ would be reviewing all other guidance documents to see if these should be modified or repealed altogether. Even so, this has not stopped civil rights activists and former Obama administration members from accusing the Trump Administration of not caring about racial diversity on campus.

The recent decision is magnified by the fact that the Department of Justice is currently investigating Harvard University over the fact that numerous Asian-American students with top scores and impressive track records were denied admission in an attempt to ensure that the university campus was racially diverse. While Harvard concedes that many Asian-American applicants have higher marks and better scores from alumni interviews than members of many other racial groups, it argues that it is right to deny many of these students admission to the university based on what it calls “personal scores” used by admissions officials who are tasked with gauging an applicant’s character.

This controversial case could very well wind up in the Supreme Court, even though the court heard a similar case in 2016. At the time, the US Supreme Court said in its 4-3 decision that educational institutions could use race as a factor in determining admissions, but set down clear guidelines making it clear that the court was not endorsing affirmative action.

Naturally, Ivy League colleges and universities have a limited number of seats, which means that there will always be more potential students than there are available openings. There are a number of factors that educational institutions should consider when deciding on who to admit, however, because the main goal of these institutions is to offer a quality education. Factors directly related to academic excellence and potential should always be the most important considerations.

Attempting to maintain a diverse campus at the expense of denying deserving applicants a quality education benefits no one. A “quota system” in which members of a particular race are guaranteed a certain number of seats is simply unacceptable, and it is high time that the Departments of Education and Justice made it clear that educational institutions must judge applicants in a fair, equitable manner.

  1. This is a long time coming and the right thing to do, I was a worker in the 60’s and it was a damned shame to see totally unqualified blacks hired to do jobs that I spent money to learn.

    • TO SOLVE AMERICAS PROBLEMS MAKE THIS CHOICE WE THE PEOPLE’ HAVE THE POWER OF OUR VOICES AND OUR VOTES, TO VOTE OUT THE ENTIRE LYING,CORRUPT, TREASONOUS DEMOCRAT PARTY COME NOV 2018, VOTE TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN AND TO END ALL CORRUPTIONS IN WASHINGTON GOVERNMENT

      • Over time, I have lost three good jobs to unqualified minorities who had either no qualifications for each particular job, or was less qualified than I was. To say that I was outraged is an vast understatement. I am glad that the President and the Attorney General is eliminating this collection of injustices. We are returning to the merit based system at last where the best qualified gets the job. Most of my knowledge in Electronics was self taught, or trained on the job, then I went back to College at my own expense to get a Masters degree in Broadcast Engineering. Then, returning to the job market, I lost jobs to minorities that had no college degrees, nor the necessary licenses from the FCC to be capable to legally do the jobs. BTW, I’m 1/4 Piqua Indian, so do not dare call me a bigot or racist.

    • Actually it was just plain discrimination there was nothing reverse about it.

If the place did not have a sufficient number of minority A under this policy and only one from that group applied they automatically got in no matter how many others even if they were minority B, C ,D etc. applied who was better qualified they were not even allowed to consider them because the POLICY was they needed a specific percent of each. So yes under this even “minorities” were discriminated against unless they SELECTIVELY enforced (violated) the actual wording of the policy.

Remember it was not that long ago the media threw a fit because this same type of policy when applied at a public school actually prevented a Black student who moved out of the district from enrolling in the same school he previously attended. Under the “required Racial percentage” law they had to follow they were prohibited from taking any more black students living outside the district until they had an specific percentage of white students the only exemption was if they lived inside the district. The media and his parent(s) felt that they were supposed to ignore the actual wording in the law because of their race and only enforce it when whites were denied admission.

Showing a clear lack of understanding when it comes to the actual definition of the word minority as the word itself has no racial attachment and simply refers to whichever one has the lowest population count in the area.

  2. Colleges and Universities should look solely at the qualifications of an applicant and base their decision solely on merit no matter what color of skin they have or where they come from!

  3. My God now I understand the system that Obama created , not base on your academics but the color of you skin.I should be on your qualifications and merit ,I’m glad that the Trump is taking steps to do way with ” Quota System” that guarateed a certain race place at any Universities.

  4. This was a continuation of a program that was started 50 to 75 years ago and the plan was to dumb down America. From what I can tell the program has been coming along quite nicely.

  5. Recent report by univ prof showed proof of black failure rate at univ to be approx 85% – attributable to substandard K-12 education – urban schools in particular. Give-away ‘fairness’ madness usurped U’s authority to set own criteria – thus degrading academic performance and, as revealed, at the expense of the very ones ‘fairness/diversity’ was ‘intended’ to help. But WAS that the intent? This grad doesn’t think so.

  6. This whole “Diversity” scheme is just another leftist scam designed to dumb down the country. A person’s race, should not even be allowed on the application.
That’s one of the reasons why the US is in the shape it’s in now. Instead of putting the brightest, most qualified people in positions of authority, we now have those who were at the bottom of their class being selected simply because of their race, that’s a double edged sword, because it happens with ALL races.

  7. Asians have been discriminated because they score higher than most people. IQ is not racist, its a biological/genetic fact. Everyone has to study and do their best. All races and cultures have produced brilliant people. We must have a level playing field for all. Most muslims have a lower IQ but that is because they marry blood relatives. There is a reason societies have a taboo against incest.

  8. On a college application there should not be any question as to race, sex or nationality. There should be a rating system on marks and academic excellence. All test should be based on what the students have covered in high schools, not what the college thinks that they should know. IF there is a severe shortage of higher learning institutes the government should make it possible for more schools to be opened.

  9. If this goes through Havard will probably become a majority Korean university , good or bad ? But more than likely true .

  10. And someone tried to convince me that obama the fraud wasn’t a racist — I laughed in his face which he didn’t appreciate– because he and his wife are 1 & 2 most racist people in this country. I hope Harverd gets their racist policies shoved right where they belong.
