Some fields require students to have a masters degree (or better) to get a good job, but one school is now limiting the options offered to grad students. This approach is making it more difficult for students to get the qualifications needed, just because the school wants to better align with Black Lives Matter.
The University of Chicago has received considerable backlash after its recent decision to limit the class and major possibilities for graduate students in the English program. To become a professor at any college (and at many other schools as well), secure a job in journalism, or publishing or qualify for many other positions — a candidate needs a PhD in English.
The University of Chicago is leveraging this need to further a political agenda — and is defending its actions — by restricting English PhD candidates to just one topic — Black Studies.
According to the University website:
“For the 2020-2021 graduate admissions cycle, the University of Chicago English Department is accepting only applicants interested in working in and with Black Studies.”
This is a significant change from the school’s original, longstanding approach of admitting English PhD candidates interested in a wide range of topics, from journalism to British Literature, teaching, writing and more.
The University defended its position in a statement:
“Like many graduate programs around the country, the English Department at the University of Chicago can accept a limited number of PhD graduate students in the 2020-21 application season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and limited employment opportunities for English PhDs.”
Some students already in attendance as undergraduates and in the process of applying to the graduate school would no longer be considered as candidates under this new rule, unless they complied with the new admission policy. The University has sited COVID-19 as one of the reasons for the switch to Black Studies — but not given a reason as to how these two things align, other than limiting the number of overall slots for students. All of the incoming slots at the University of Chicago English program have now been dedicated to those students restricting their area of interest to Black Studies.
Once the word spread to the academic community and the potential field of applicants, backlash was swift — complaints on Twitter and other social media sites soon followed.
“I just tweeted an article about the University of Chicago English Department. This is all too idiotic. Most of us don’t know whether to laugh or cry. By the logic of their creed, wouldn’t English be the oppressor’s language?” Twitter user Ayaan Hirsi Ali wrote.
The change comes during a time when portraits of Founding Fathers and World War II veterans are being removed from campuses. It is yet another strong shift even further left for at least one American university.

So the program is English -I guess its literature only by Black authors, The language will no longer be taught as mainstream but the linguistic patois used by afro-american communities, The mind boggles at what will be allowed for the Doctoral thesis.I was not aware that polemics was part of an English studies PhD. It is nonsensical and if anybody has the guts for it the U of C needs to be punished in whatever ways one can punish a so called higher institution of learning. Even more information in which main stream media will report only in the narrow stream of its current narrative. As an employer I will no longer employ anybody from that Institution as of the current year. This is not going to help students. The decision is nothing to with race but with far left beliefs.

Why does anyone send their child to a school with racist directives. What the heck is “Black Studies” except an indoctrination into critical race theory? This is simple divergent, destructive ideology from the left. Name one thing this has to do with an English Major. It does not. Everyone, pull your kids, enroll in schools with a curriculum that will allow your child to have better preparation for a career. Learning to be self-loathing and inferior is not what education is about, unless you are striving to develop a class of second-place-finishers.
