Katiria Tirado has a history that should have made it clear to Connecticut’s Department of Children and Families that she was unfit to care for her two children.
The father of her oldest son is a registered sex offender who impregnated her when she was only 15 years old. She had been referred to the DCF for suspected child abuse and neglect in the past and had stopped sending her oldest son, Matthew Tirado, to school months before he died from severe malnutrition and dehydration. However, the state is using the fact that Ms. Tirado at one point withdrew her younger daughter from public school with the stated intention of homeschooling her to harass and regulate homeschoolers throughout the state.
Sarah Eagen, the head of the Connecticut Office of the Child Advocate, is currently subpoenaing records of homeschoolers throughout the state in an attempt to create a regulatory framework for parents who opt to school their children at home. In fact, she is demanding that schools either turn over relevant records to her office or face legal consequences.
The child advocate, like many anti-homeschool advocates in Connecticut and other states, is clearly blaming the death of an innocent child on the fact that the state of Connecticut does not monitor homeschoolers. Those who agree with her point out that homeschool parents should not be allowed to teach their own children without supervision, because public school teachers are not allowed to plan classes or teach without a great deal of oversight and government interference.
However, the same advocates that clamor for homeschool parents to be monitored and supervised in the same manner as public schools fail to notice one glaring double standard. When a child who has been schooled in a public school dies of abuse or neglect, the public school system does not face scrutiny or calls for more supervision. Instead, the incidence if blamed squarely on the parents and, in some instance, on child protective services in the state that have failed to miss important warning signs that one or more children were in danger. On the other hand, when a parent uses homeschooling as a pretext to abuse or mistreat a child, homeschooling in general is blamed and millions of parents who are safe, responsible and ethical homeschoolers face government interference for something that is not their fault. This same scenario played out some time back in California when the Turpin case was used as a pretext for a bill that would have collected the names and addresses of homeschool parents throughout the state. Thankfully, the bill died in committee as more than a thousand homeschooling parents traveled to the state capital to protest the government interference in their private affairs.
Naturally, homeschoolers throughout the state of Connecticut are protesting the obvious government hypocrisy in the way this case is being handled. They, together with homeschool organizations in the state, are pointing out the irony of blaming homeschool parents for an incidence that is in fact entirely the government’s fault.
Matthew Tirado has been in public school all his life. The government knew that there was a very good possibility that his mother was abusive. When she pulled him from public school, she gave no notice of her intention to school him at home, allowing him to be listed as truant by the school. However, the Department of Children and Families failed in their duty to protect the young man. As the department faces inquiries into the way they handled the situation, the government appears to be attempting to deflect the blame to homeschooling instead of looking for ways to improve their handling of other, similar cases.
Matthew Tirado’s death was a sad tragedy that should never have occurred. However, empowering the same government that failed the young man to dictate the affairs of tens of thousands of innocent parents and children across the state absolutely not the solution to the problem. While it is impossible to prevent every single instance of child abuse, there are better ways to handle the situation. An honest government office would admit its mistakes and look for ways to rectify them instead of putting all its energies into blaming a scapegoat.

Its obvious after viewing the behavior of Connecticut senator Blumenthal that the state has a problem with its leadership. They all have crap for brains and seem to shake when they talk because of the stress of thinking and talking a the same time! You might draw the conclusion, similar to what they have concluded about home schooling, that the Connecticut congressional members all have a nervous affliction and should be hospitalized!

Look at what goes on in public scholls and how they catch everything. They allow bullying when it suits them and the education in lublic schools fall short. Ms Eagen is a typical Stalinist, Marxist radical that has been taking over the education system for some time now. Parents need to fight her all the way to the top courts. The public schools are no longer teaching the three R’s and moral values, but political unrest and hate.
I lived in CT and worked in their school system–it is all about LOSING MONEY–THAT IS ALL THEY ARE INTERESTED IN–THAT IS CONNECTICUT!! The more kids in the schools, the more money the state gets, especially in special ed. Don’t get me started!
The government doesn’t want us homeschooling our children,because we don’t teach them the liberal,progressive agenda.

Where is the outcry to abolish PUBLIC schools as far more children die from abusive parents who are not home schooled than those that are.
Trying to use a single incident that like so many others was caused by the STATES lack of doing their job when comes to actual abuse of children is illogical and unconstitutional.

The state wants to make sure that the kids learn from “Rules for Radicals” and the “Communist Manifesto”, and not from American History, and that pesky Constitution!
This is the same state that ignored the mothers’ pleas to get help for her son, Adam Lanza. Then she pulled him out of school and tried homeschooling him. For those of you who don’t remember, CT concluded that the reason Adam shot up an elementary school was because of his few months of homeschooling, rather than the multiple years of his being neglected in the public school system.
Why is anyone surprised at this? It’s how the Left operates. If there’s a problem with government schools, they sweep it under the rug. If there’s a problem with ONE home schooled child, punish ALL home schoolers. It’s just like the Second Amendment.
If ONE person commits a gun crime, take ALL guns away from EVERYBODY. Have they not read the Constitution, or do they believe it is for EVERYONE, well, everyone but them, because they’re SPECIAL!?
