President Trump’s ‘Fake News Awards’ Crashed the GOP Website

Among other things, President Trump’s detractors have called him a racist, a homophobe, a dictator, and mentally instable. However, the one word they haven’t pinned him with yet is boring.

On January 17, 2018, Trump announced his highly anticipated “Fake News Awards” on his Twitter account. The president has an impressive 46 million followers on Twitter, so to say this was a trending topic would be a vast understatement. In the tweet, Trump provided the link to the GOP website where the names of the rewards recipients were posted. As people flooded to the GOP website, it abruptly crashed under the enormous demand.

Shortly after the website folded, the GOP account tweeted, “Tonight, gop.com saw more traffic than ever before. Even though the servers were scaled up, the interest was even greater than anticipated.” The GOP account went on to say, “Traffic is off the charts” and “Come back soon.”

After a few antagonizing hours, the website was back up and running. Not surprisingly, someone from the much maligned The New York Times headlined the “Fake News Awards” list. The honor belonged to so-called economist Paul Krugman, who proclaimed that the United States economy wouldn’t ever recover on the day of Trump’s 2016 election win. ABC’s Brian Ross also received recognition for a false report that negatively impacted the U.S. stock market. CNN, the Washington Post, and TIME were also dubiously honored.

To contrast the “Fake News Awards” winners, Trump listed some of the things he’s accomplished during his exciting first year in office. The president cited that almost two million jobs have been created during his short tenure. He also noted that African Americans and Hispanic Americans are reaping the lowest unemployment rate in recorded history. Besides mentioning the historic tax cut legislation he recently signed, the president proudly announced that ISIS has been crushed in Iraq and Syria. He also touted that 22 business stimulating deregulatory actions have been taken for each new regulatory one.

While people were bombarding the GOP website to view the “Fake News Awards,” left-leaning “fact-checking” news sites and media outlets were scrambling to save face. Politifact said, “the list of ‘fake news’ winners released by President Donald Trump and the Republican Party on Thursday is mainly a tally of reported mistakes about the president and his administration. Many of the offending journalists and organizations had already acknowledged and corrected their errors. In some cases, there were disciplinary actions.”

Echoing Politifact, The Washington Post stated, “news organizations operate in a competitive arena and mistakes are bound to be made. The key test is whether an error is acknowledged and corrected.”

Liberal “fact-checking” news sites and media outlets weren’t the only ones unimpressed by the President’s “Fake News Awards.” According to Fox News, outgoing Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, Republican, was incensed by them.

On the morning of January 17, 2018, Flake took to the Senate floor to publicly chastise the president about his plans to release the unsavory honors. Flake, famous for his disdain for Trump, ripped into the president for referring to the media as “the enemy of the people.”

“It is a testament to the condition of our democracy that our own president uses words infamously spoken by Joseph Stalin to describe his enemies,” Flake said.

Besides comparing President Trump’s words to those of a murderous Soviet dictator, the much beguiled senator said, “When a figure in power reflexively calls any press that doesn’t suit him ‘fake news,’ it is that person who should be the figure of suspicion, not the press.”

Flake also suggested Trump’s blunt way of speaking has inspired other dictators and authoritarians around the world. During a daily press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders called out Flake’s apparent hypocrisy.

“I found it quite interesting that he is coming out to attack this president considering he’s the one who was recently defending an actually oppressive regime,” she told the press. “He went to Cuba a few weeks ago and served as a mouthpiece for the oppressive Cuban government.”

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel also condemned Flake for his disdainful remarks about the President. In a January 17, 2018 tweet, she stated, “Sen. Flake, turn on the news. It’s wall-to-wall with biased coverage against @POTUS. He has every right to push back. Comparing the leader of the free world to murderous dictators is absurd. You’ve gone too far.”

  1. Per Pew Research, 95% of the mainstream news items in 2017 related to Pres. Trump were negative as opposed to Obama who showed only 20% negative during one of his years. Is the mainstream media in the liberal camp? The statistics appear to said a very strong “Yes.” If the ratio was any where near normal, one could argue that the press is simply seeking competitive news. A near 20 to one ratio would tend to indicate a strong bias.

  2. The media thinks it is able to mask its outright lies and outrageous bias. But it’s not as clever as it thinks it is. Worse, media participants can’t or won’t recognize their failures and change their tactics. This is bad for their advertisers who hope to sell product, but instead come off as participants in these false narratives. Why would you advertise on CNN, unless you are Planned Parenthood?

  3. The media is out of line biased. They have embarrassed themselves to considered non-news. Now the FBI with select loss of emails is loosing respect. I managed high-end scientific computing on a global basis for 45 years and would have been fired if data was lost. It would have taken a massive multi state, multi country natural disaster to loose data.

  4. We as citizens have already figured that out. They are not fooling the population. In fact it has become a stupid game. Keep moving forward President Trump, keep moving forward. Your cheerleaders are here for you.

  5. I started becoming interested in Media Bias while watching Howard K. Smith and Harry Reasoner and the Reasoner Report, as well as Walter Cronkite, back in the early 70. It wasn’t as easy to prove back then, …because there really wasn’t much that could be called “alternative” media.
I started noticing the bias when a few of my friends who were in various positions in the military, in a couple different branches, would tell me what was going on in Vietnam and Cambodia, …then i would watch the 6:00 O’Clock news and the above personalities, …and would wonder where they were getting their news, because of the incredible contrast between what was happening, and what was being reported.
The first real examination of Media Bias that i did was during the Iran Contra hearings, when i had access via the Internet, to C-SPAN, and could actually watch the hearings in progress, …then i would later hear News Anchors and correspondents speaking of the hearings during evening news programs, and they were very, VERY, obviously biasing what actually happened. They all seemed vested in villanizing both Lt. Col. Oliver North, and then President, Ronald Reagan. At that point i became a permanent skeptic about the regular news on ABC, CNN, NBC and CBS. (I think it was around that time that CNN came to my attention, and i really hadn’t watched them prior to the late 80’s)
It isn’t that i believed all these news sources were lying, as much as i quit automatically believing they were telling the whole truth. The more i would do research on their coverage of events, candidates for presidential, judicial or congressional positions, the more i realized they were always heavily biased toward one person, or against another. …Most often, they favored left-leaning candidates and policies, and disfavored those who were right-leaning in their political ideology.
As modern media has given way to alternative sources, and the network TV media has lost it’s monopoly on the news, it has become much easier to check news stories for their veracity.
Oddly, as the monopoly has crumbled and disintegrated, …the leftist political ideologies seem to have become even more angry, vindictive and determined, rather than reassessing their own bias, …and now they seem determined to attack anything or anyone who disagrees with their perspective, …to the point of even disallowing differences of opinion in forums that were created for the sharing of diverse ideas, like our collages and universities.
It is often difficult, these days, even with the addition of radio, television and Internet sources that actually cover right-leaning perspectives or in rare instances, “both” perspectives, to know who is actually telling the unvarnished truth.
That is bad news….. BUT the “good” news is that the Truth is now out there for anyone who want’s to invest the time and interest in finding it, …even when it may not lead them to what they want to believe.
I believe that the Truth will always be known in the end, and it will always be the easiest to remember.

I have to admit, though, that reading many of the left-wing news’ disparaging comments about President Trump’s alleged “lies” seems hypocritical to the level of comical, after 8-years of the former administration. lol
“If you like your Doctor you can keep your Doctor!”, ….”The ACA will save the average family $2,500.00 each year”, …”If you LIke your Insurance Plan, you can keep your Insurance Plan!”, … Or, perhaps one of the most significant, yet under-reported Obama lies was when he was talking about our Nation’s beginnings and stated something like: “It’s the founding ideals that the flag draped over my father’s coffin stand for.” ….Ummmmmm, but his father was buried in Kenya, and “never” served in the US military. (But maybe i read this wrong, …and he WAS talking about the Kenyan flag??? lol)

  6. I think I speak for most Trump supporters, but we love President Trump’s style. He is bold, aggressive, kind, funny, says it like it is and shoves back. This is what is needed and will continue to need until we get some honesty, respect and honor within our government and around the world.

  7. OK, let’s look at the criteria the fake news uses for proof of their credibility. The Washington Post stated, “news organizations operate in a competitive arena and mistakes are bound to be made. The key test is whether an error is acknowledged and corrected.” Sound good? Especially when there are no criteria for the timing of acknowledgment of the “error” (Saturday’s paper) or the location of the statement; i.e. page 1 Headline for the error and page 17 of the obituaries for the correction? Note that this description of their test criteria is, in itself, a demonstration of their biased and manipulative behavior.

  8. Agitation and Propaganda Office of the Marxist Democrat Party consists of New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, San Francisco blah-blah, etc.,…also ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, Facebook,…and hundreds of local newspapers and magazines; then there are a number of local internet outfits beating the daily drums of socialism and “social justice” and “anti-racism”; on the other side there is only Fox, now under the concerted effort to delegitimizing it by accusations of sexual improprieties.

  9. There are to many people that would like to see America turned into a socialistic 3rd world country and controlled by a one world government. This would be very bad for everyone because we would lose a lot of the rights we now enjoy.

  10. LOOK WHO OWNS a LOT OF THE MEDIA. i KNOW SOROS OWNS ONE OF THE BIG ONES AND HAS INTEREST IN OTHERS.. CHECK IT OUT./
PRESIDENT TRUMP WERE HERE FOR YOU 100% AND DON’T LISTEN TO ANY OF THE WINNER OF FAKE NEWS. THEY WILL ALL GO DOWN IN TIME. THERE ARE STILL “IDIOTS” THERE THAT DON’T KNOW A LIE IF IT SMACKED THEM IN TE FACE..
