Long one of President Trump’s staunch defenders against detractors, Donald Trump, Jr. now faces the eye of the storm himself.
The president’s son began to face harsh scrutiny as information about his meeting with a Russian businessman leaked out over social media. Allegedly, the meeting was set up so that Donald Trump, Jr. could collect negative information about Trump’s then-opponent in the presidential race, Hillary Clinton.
Many political experts are worried that the allegations against the son will implicate his father. As the elder Trump continues to make his global rounds to shore up allegiances and discuss a new relationship with Russia, his administration is being held back by unrelated issues.
According to records, Donald Trump, Jr. attended a meeting with Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya along with Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort, both very important aides to President Trump. The attorney promised to give the group incriminating evidence that would sink Hillary Clinton in the presidential race, information that has yet to come to light.
It is very important to note that none of the activities of any of the people involved in this meeting have been shown to be illegal – or even effective in stunting Clinton’s efforts to win the presidency. No, she lost that race entirely on her own.
Remember that this is the woman who thought she could win black votes by saying that she carried hot sauce in her purse. She is the woman who put a mentally deficient Bill Clinton on the road as her surrogate. She also was caught doing real business in Russia, as showcased in emails taken from her top aide by WikiLeaks.
The aftermath of the Trump family scandal is affecting domestic and foreign policy. Less attention being given to the politics and the economy of America on the world stage can only hurt American citizens. The attention and the resources of the press are solely dedicated to taking down Trump for the supposed transgressions of his son. They could be much better used on actual policy, but liberal outlets do not want to hear anything about that.
The real question at this point is how the White House will make this meaningless scandal go away. There are a few things that this administration could do to speed along the process.
First, the White House should take Jared Kushner’s suggestion to dedicate more short-term resources to defending Donald Trump, Jr. Any elongated investigations would only take away more resources from the American people. It is best to handle the problem now, perhaps with outside counsel as suggested by Press Secretary Sean Spicer.
The White House itself should also take a more active role in defending Donald Trump, Jr. So far, there have been very few talking points offered to Republican surrogates who are out on the talk show trail. It would definitely benefit the White House and the country in general to get the message straight before the next round of weekend talk shows.
More resources should be put towards determining the actual nature of any meetings that may or may not have occurred between any Trump aide and Russian officials. Note this is not an investigation – insiders know that nothing went on during these meetings. It is precisely because none of these meetings were meant to affect the presidential election that the administration can be more transparent about them. This information should be placed into the public eye ahead of Congress continuing to waste public resources on their fruitless investigations.
Robert Mueller, special counsel to Congress, is already gearing up to put another layer of investigations on the Trump administration. Special committees in Congress of Trump’s enemies are using anything they can as leverage to move an impeachment proceeding forward. It is essential that Trump, Kushner, Trump, Jr., and the rest of the current administration get out ahead of opposing political forces. Even though Democrats understand that they have no leg to stand on, they can still use this alleged scandal as leverage.
Conservatives are wise to keep in mind that Democrats are now involved in a failing party that is fighting for its life. Perception is reality, and right now the liberal media is winning the war on perception.
Trump should take the advice of Kushner and other top aides in the administration – let the truth come out about Donald Trump, Jr. so that the lies do not have a chance to fester.
