Liberals Take Anti-Kavanaugh Hysteria to New Heights

Liberals have been furious since President Trump announced that he was nominating Brett Kavanaugh to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. Even so, the hysteria has reached new heights as Democrat politicians whip up hysteria about Kavanaugh and what he may or could do as a Supreme Court Justice.

The fearmongering, which is likely intended to put voters on edge and drive up mid-term election turnout in their favor, borders on absurd when one researches the facts behind Judge Kavanaugh and his past judicial record.

At a recent rally organized by Planned Parenthood, Moveon.org and other left-leaning organizations, Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand took the stage and told attendees that Judge Kavanaugh does not believe that constitutional rights apply to women. She went on to state that the judge would overturn Roe vs. Wade, ensure that women would not have access to reproductive care or freedom and would stand against basic civil rights and liberties for women. She also accused him of being a threat to free speech because his record indicates that he would support companies’ rights to refuse to provide birth control to their employees as part of a healthcare plan.

The assertions were backed up by Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden, who told protestors that women would be in clear and present danger of losing their privacy if Judge Kavanaugh is confirmed to the Supreme Court.

While the accusations are certainly scary, a closer look at the facts proves that women really have nothing to worry about. First of all, the only so-called “reproductive right” being debated is the ability to obtain an abortion, which can hardly be classed as “reproduction” in the first place. Judge Kavanaugh’s record in this regard does not give a clear indication that he would vote to overturn Roe vs. Wade; in fact, there are many conservatives who worry that he would indeed reaffirm the decision if the issue should arise before the Supreme Court yet again.

There are no facts to prove that the judge is eager to force women into a subservient role similar to that portrayed in “Handmaid’s Tale”. While he may rule that companies do not have to pay for a woman’s birth control and/or abortion, such a move would not affect a woman’s ability to obtain the medications or medical procedures of her choice as long as she is willing to pay for them.

What is more, even some liberals are beginning to come around and support Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination. Lisa Blatt, a liberal Democrat feminist who has argued more cases before the Supreme Court than any other woman, praised the judge for his proactive hiring of women clerks and called him “decent, sober, humane and brilliant.”

Akhil Reed Amar, a liberal professor at Yale Law School, noted in a recent op-ed that Judge Kavanaugh is indeed highly qualified for the job due to his extensive experience. The judge currently sits on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, a position that he has held since 2006. Many of his clerks have gone on to become clerks for both liberal and conservative Supreme Court justices. He has taught at leading law schools, and published noteworthy law review articles. What is more, his views on matters pertaining to presidential authority and the property rights of criminal defendants have even influenced Supreme Court decisions.

Because the Supreme Court holds a great deal of power to shape American laws and appointments to the court are for life, it is not surprising that Democrats are furious over the fact that President Trump is now able to nominate a second Supreme Court justice. However, the fact remains that doing so is his right as the President of the United States.

Those who are currently using scare tactics to drum up opposition to the judge’s nomination are really just making fools of themselves, as even some of the president’s opponents cannot help but concede that Judge Kavanaugh is a good choice for the job.
